Over het archief

Het OWA, het open archief van het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium heeft tot doel alle vrij toegankelijke onderzoeksresultaten van dit instituut in digitale vorm aan te bieden. Op die manier wil het de zichtbaarheid, verspreiding en gebruik van deze onderzoeksresultaten, alsook de wetenschappelijke communicatie maximaal bevorderen.

Dit archief wordt uitgebouwd en beheerd volgens de principes van de Open Access Movement, en het daaruit ontstane Open Archives Initiative.

Abstract:

De onderzoeksgroep Fysische Geografie (FARD) werd opgericht in 1970. Het oorspronkelijke onderzoek, geconcentreerd op glaciologie en kwartaire geologie (sinds 1985), verschoof naar de onderzoeksthema's 'ijs en klimaat' en 'vulkanologie' (vanaf 2011). Het eerste thema richt zich op de dynamiek van natuurlijke ijsmassa's en hun interactie met het klimaatsysteem. De nadruk van de onderzoeksgroep ligt op 3D thermomechanische modellering van de continentale cryosfeer (Antarctica, Groenland en kwartaire ijskappen), regionale Antarctische ijskapdynamiek (modellering, veldwerk), en numerieke modellering van Arctische ijskappen en alpiene berggletsjers, ondersteund door veldwerk in Zwitserland, de Russische Federatie (de Kaukasus) en Kirgizië (Hooggebergte-Azië). Van specifiek belang is een beter begrip van de rol en de dynamiek van landijs in relatie tot het klimaat en de gevolgen daarvan voor het mondiale zeeniveau. De onderzoeksgroep Fysische Geografie - IJs en Klimaat is ook sterk betrokken bij de IPCC-rapporten over de thema's 'cryosfeer', 'zeespiegel' en 'poolijskappen'.
