Paulo Corgosinho is a marine and freshwater biologist with expertise in the taxonomy and phylogenetics of Harpacticoida. He is also interested in the use of benthic and planktonic invertebrates (especially copepods) as bioindicators of environmental integrity. Although most of his career is focused on the morphological aspects of harpacticoids diversity, recently he established a close collaboration with the laboratory of Marine Genomics of the University of Puerto Rico. There, in collaboration with professor Nikolaos V. Schizas, he started applying molecular techniques to solve questions about phylogeny, phylogeography, biogeography, and ecology of Copepoda. Paulo's Ph.D. was on the phylogenetic systematics of a Neotropical genus of Parastenocarididae, a freshwater and groundwater family of Harpacticoida, also the subject of many of his recent publications. From 2007 until 2009 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the German Center for the Study of Marine Biodiversity (DZMB-Senckenberg am Meer), there studying the harpacticoid diversity of abyssal zones, within the scope of the CeDAMar project, and describing new species, genera, and a new family. Nowadays, Paulo is a professor of Zoology at the State University of Montes Claros in Brazil, supervising graduate and MSc. students in projects about the taxonomy, phylogenetics, and biodiversity inventory of freshwater and marine meiobenthos in South America and the Caribbean. He is recently involved in different international projects such as the biodiversity inventory of the harpacticoids in the mesophotic coral ecosystems and the deep-sea of Puerto Rico, and the biodiversity of meiofauna copepods in the deep sea of the Indian Ocean. A special interest is dedicated to the reconstruction of the phylogeny and biogeography of Ameiridae and the phylogenetic position of the Parastenocarididae within Harpacticoida. | |
