Abstract |
CAESAR is a Coordination Action aiming at strengthening the potential of research on Intermodal transport and logistics. Within the scope of the European Research Area several actions had been taken by different transport industries, which joined their eff orts through specific Research Advisory Councils. Nonetheless, a gap in this wide scope exists, as it is represented by intermodalism. Facts indicate a tremendously growing trend for intermodal and combined traffic in the future. For sake of example, ord ers to the shipyards indicate that the global ship fleet size will double by 2008, which comes from the shipping lines expectations of doubling their volumes within the next 6 years. Moreover, rail-road intermodal operators are looking to reduce of 100 k m the break-even distance of combined transport (from 500 down to 400 km), so that the potential demand for transport could be more than doubled. This challenging option, along with the expected growth of the sea trades, could be handled and faced with o nly by proper innovation coming from targeted research in the field. Traditional research areas, such as those steered by specific-modal industries, have established Advisory Councils to set Strategic Plans for research in conjunction with business scenari os. CAESAR will be the leader action in using the good practice of the modal approaches turning them into opportunities for intermodal transport. CAESAR shall:- Establish the European Intermodal Research Advisory Council (EIRAC)- Prepare the EIRAC Terms of Reference- Prepare the Strategic Research Agenda for Intermodal Transport, in conjunction with business scenarios- Set-up and run the EIRAC Communication Strategy, to liase with mode-specific Advisory Councils- Determine the Implementation Plan of the Str ategic Research AgendaEIRAC will be a permanent round-table of authoritative individuals with decision-making capability, to contribute with significant advice to research and technology programmes. |
