Abstract |
Data on breeding bird numbers, distribution and trends, in particular of rare and vulnerable species, are frequently needed by the environmental administration. Since 1994, colonial, rare and feral breeding birds in Flanders have been censused on a yearly basis and in a standardized way. For as many species as possible information was also collected on population numbers and trends during the last decades, and compared with recent data. We describe first the monitoring scheme and its main results. Then we analyse the present state of the Flemish Special Protected Areas as an example of a useful application of the breeding scheme towards nature conservation. We analyse (a) how many and which Annex I species are at present breeding in Flanders, (b) where do they occur in relation to the SPA's, (c) how are their populations doing? Finally, we discuss some possible future uses of the data in relation to the new Flemish Decree on Nature Conservation and the Natural Environment. |
