Abstract |
The development and current techniques of use of dichlorvos in the salmon farming industry in Ireland are reviewed. The chemical and physical characteristics of dichlorvos and associated chemicals are discussed in the light of their implications for: the efficacy of treatment, safety to the target organism, worker safety, consumer safety, and environmental impact. The development of alternative chemical treatments and the difficulties associated with some of these new potential treatments are outlined. The current status of the development of non chemical treatments including vaccines and biological controls is reviewed and suggestions are presented on a possible integrated approach to lice control. |
