Abstract |
The idea to organize a workshop dedicated to the marine sandwave dynamics was proposed in 1998 during a meeting, held in Paris, of the North Sea Hydrographic Commission. 1- Marine sandwaves, let say subaqueous dunes as Gail Ashley proposed, are widespread on numerous continental shelves. A lot of people are looking at them with different eyes. In this context, what are the main objectives of such a workshop? Subaqueous dunes are mobile sedimentary bodies that are utterly sensitive and can be considered as protection or risk factors. The objective of this workshop is to improve our knowledge in the field of their dynamics by: - sharing the skills of concerned scientists, - comparing the specialities of sea-observers, measures, experimenters, modellers, all of them looking for a meeting point, - trying to mix our ideas in order to get a better tool to predict the dune position and for a better management of the continental shelf waters.2 - The workshop is international by essence and multidisciplinary by reason. - The interest of this workshop is outlined by the thirty six lectures or poster and three keynotes the abstract of which you can find in this 'Extended abstract' book. Authors and co-authors are coming from 13 countries with a majority of europeans. It represents a great number of research laboratories and companies. - Among the objectives of the workshop was the idea to combine different expertises. This seems to be achieved as we find in the authors' list fluid mechanics theoreticians to coastal managers and end-users. It represents some universities but also the main European marine research institutes, national agencies, 'applied' companies and environmental managers.3 - Four main sessions have been defined: - In-situ measurement and morphodynamics, - Hydrodynamic and hydro-sedimentary modelling, - Recent and long-term evolution, - Databases, management and forecasting. We hope this workshop will, at least, open our mind to other research fields and led to fruitfull discussions. No doubt that forthcoming investigations to be carried out on dunes by participants and other will shed light on some of the still obscure remaining problems. |
