Abstract
    Through a compilation of the available archaeological and historical data, a reconstruction is made of the development of the Flemish sea fishery. The evolution can be followed from a coastal fishery to the exploitation of the open sea, which eventually led to the exploration of more northern waters within the north Atlantic.
