| Abstract |
This chapter contains an analysis of Neolithic and Chalcolithic shell finds excavated at the prehistoric mounds of Bakun A and B, Gap, Mushki, and Jari A and B in the Marv Dasht plain in Iran. The described material, 66 specimens in total, is kept in the archaeological collection of the University Museum of the University of Tokyo, and has not been published before. The results show that the Neolithic and Chalcolithic occupants of Marv Dasht used freshwater and marine shells for ornamental purposes. Local freshwater mussels provided mother-of-pearl. Beads and pendants from marine molluscs were transported over long distances and came from as far as the Gulf of Oman. |
