| Abstract |
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can form on steel surfaces due to seawater-induced corrosion. Corrosion in marine environments is a critical failure mechanism for steel structures, often leading to premature degradation and structural failure. The high concentration of Mg2+ cations in seawater and the elevated interfacial pH can facilitate the formation of Mg-Fe-LDH corrosion products that can affect the corrosion rate. Given that the formation of Mg-Fe-LDH is driven by pH elevation, this study investigates the Mg-Fe-LDH formation at open circuit potential and its role in corrosion protection. To explore this, tests are conducted on construction steel immersed in artificial seawater at different temperatures and for different immersion times. The surface characterizations reveal that Mg-Fe-LDH can form at early stages of immersion and at low temperatures. The temperature elevation first favors the formation of LDH, followed by aragonite formation due to a shortage of available Fe3+ at higher temperatures. Consequently, the corrosion resistance noticeably increased with temperature augmentation due to the formation of LDH and aragonite. Electrochemical measurements confirm that LDH formation and growth provide a physical barrier against corrosive agents, maintaining corrosion resistance over time. These findings provide insight into corrosion product dynamics and offer a potential pathway for mitigating corrosion failure in marine infrastructure. |
