Abstract |
Lake Grevelingen (106 km²) was created in 1971 by damming off an estuary. Since then the lake contains seawater with a salinity of 15-17 promille CI-. Benthic filter-feeders. e.g. Mytilus edulis, Cardium edule, and Crepidula fornicata, still are important links in the foodweb of the lake and their average annual production in 1973 and 1974 was investigated. Phytoplankton production in the lake has been estimated for 1973. By means of stomach analyses it has been verified that phytoplankton serves as food for benthic filter-feeders. By means of food budget considerations it then was investigated whether phytoplankton production may be a sufficient food source for the benthic filter-feeders of the lake. This may be so, but a critical role is played by phytoplankton transport by turbulent diffusion. |
