In 2012 verloren we Jean Jacques Peters, voormalig ingenieur van het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium (1964 tot 1979) en internationaal expert in sedimenttransport, rivierhydraulica en -morfologie. Als eerbetoon aan hem hebben we potamology (http://www.potamology.com/) gecreëerd, een virtueel gedenkarchief dat als doel heeft om zijn manier van denken en morfologische aanpak van rivierproblemen in de wereld in stand te houden en te verspreiden.

Abstract

The global climate change has manifold impacts on the ocean and its behaviour which directly translates to the coastal/nearshore region as well as the governing processes. One such climate-induced response of the coastal region is the increased frequency and intensity of extreme waves, leading to increased overtopping risk. To adopt effective countermeasures, it is useful to understand the overtopping processes in detail. In this report, wave overtopping flow is simulated using two numerical models, SWASH and DualSPHysics, to understand overtopping flow characteristics on the promenade and inside buildings representing ones that exist along the Belgian coast. The investigation in SWASH quantifies the relationship between the overtopping discharge and the possibility fora person to tumble, as well as the relationship between the overtopping discharge and the possibility for windows to be destroyed by overtopping waves. In the second part in order to understand the risk of overtopping, a new coupling method is established. Through the state-of-the-art visualization technique, DualSPHysics simulation results are visualized. Thanks to the visualization the process of overtopping bore is now revealed, and we can understand what can happen during the inundation in the case of severe overtopping. The DualSPHysics 3D simulation reveals that there is a risk when the wave motion combines with furniture.
