Abstract |
Extensive studies on biological effects of contaminants in marine systems have been carried out for over two decades but there is very limited knowledge of effects on pelagic organisms. The ICES Workshop on Biological Effects of Contaminants in Pelagic Ecosystems (BECPELAG) was a multinational, multidisciplinary approach to address this issue, resulting in the development of monitoring guidelines. During 7 research cruises in 2001, pelagic organisms were collected and cages deployed along 2 pollution gradients in the German Bight and in the vicinity of an oil production area off the Norwegian coast. More than 30 research groups in 12 European countries were involved in applying various techniques including the use of Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) and a range of in vitro and in vivo test systems to determine the effects of pollution. The contributions in the book thus provide a toolkit of applicable methods for risk assessment and water column monitoring. |
