Abstract |
The Anthuridea Monod, 1922 are a suborder of Isopoda characterized by an elongate cylindrical body form, without dorsal coxal plates, and with a uropodal exopod attached to the peduncle proximally and dorsally. Over 500 species are described and these are assigned to 57 genera after synonymy of a further 30 genera. The taxonomic history of the group since 1814 is briefly reviewed. A cladistic analysis supports recognition of six families of Anthuridea, two new: Anthuridae Leach, 1814 (24 genera); Antheluridae Poore & Lew Ton, 1988 (3 genera); Expanathuridae fam. nov. (7 genera); Hyssuridae Wägele, 1981 (6 genera); Leptanthuridae fam. nov. (11 genera); and Paranthuridae Menzies & Glynn, 1968 (6 genera). The significant taxonomic changes proposed here are: erection of the new family Expanathuridae for seven genera previously included in Hyssuridae, Paranthuridae and Anthuridae; erection of the new family Leptanthuridae for 11 genera previously included in Paranthuridae; synonymy of Indonesanthura Negoescu, 1997 with Caenanthura Kensley, 1978; synonymy of Filanthura Wägele, 1981 with Indanthura Pillai & Eapen, 1966; synonymy of Centranthura Wägele, 1981 and Monodanthura Wägele & Platvoet, 1982 with Notanthura Monod, 1927; synonymy of Agulanthura Kensley, 1975 with Quantanthura Menzies & George, 1972; synonymy of Stellanthura Wägele, 1979, Chalixanthura Kensley, 1984 and Licranthura Kensley & Schotte, 1987 with Heptanthura Kensley, 1978; and synonymy of Neoanthura Menzies, 1956 with Leptanthura Sars, 1897. All families and genera are diagnosed using characters from a DELTA database and their relationships discussed. I offer dichotomous keys for their identification. All valid species are listed in an appendix. Biogeography at the family and genus level is briefly discussed. |
