Abstract |
The spectacular carbonate mounds and associated deep-water corals to the west of Ireland have been focus of various EU funded research projects such as GEOMOUND, ECOMOUND, and ACES. During these projects several new mound structures were identified and proposed for further investigation. The Polarstern - Victor ARK-XIX/3a cruise from the 2-20th June 2003 focussed on the biology of cold-water corals and the evolution of associated giant, deep-water carbonate mounds in the Porcupine Seabight an the south-eastern part of the Rockall Trough. This international and multidisciplinary leg combined the capabilities of the modern, large and stable German polar research vessel - the Polarstern, along with the world's most advanced underwater robot - the IFREMER developed ROV VICTOR 6000 which provided the basis for 9 dives, totalling over 220 hours. This poster presents and overview of the sites investigated, and a first glimpse of the spectacular results obtained during the cruise. |
