Abstract |
The purpose of this report is to provide a critical evaluation of marine citizenship within the Sail Training Industry, to enable a set of recommendations to be made in respect of the development of a marine environmental education programme within the international sail training industry. This was achieved by firstly identifying the key concepts behind marine environmental education and a brief explanation of its evolution, which included the idea of shared responsibility and how coastal and marine subjects are currently taught. Secondly, the concept of sail training was introduced, explaining the relationship between sail training, citizenship and youth development followed by the identification of the connection between sail training and formal education. This enabled the concept of marine citizenship to be introduced along with its relationship to sail training. This was followed by online research within the international Sail Training Industry, proving data in relation to the key principles of sustainability, providing the opinions of a sample of sail training representatives to establish the current situation of marine environmental education within the sail training industry. Based on some of the findings from the online questionnaire, an evaluation of on board facilities was conducted on board a sail training vessel. This provided an opportunity to view the possible ship board limitations and hazards that could be encountered by a facilitator of marine environmental education and how they may be overcome. The findings from these phases of research enable the researcher to make a set of recommendations for the development of a voluntary marine environmental education programme for young people on board sail training vessels; along with suggestions for further research and a set of conclusions regarding marine citizenship within the international sail training industry. |
