Abstract |
The major aim of this dissertation was to identify and illustrate the representative species of the Zonarieae (Dictyotales, Phaeophyta). Consequently, identification keys were set up. This aim was, at least partly reached. The identification of several Padina-entities was not always evident; 5 of these do not correspond with any description from existing literature. More research is needed to decide whether they represent new species: a revision of the genus Padina in the Indian Ocean is an absolute necessity. The specimens studied here were mainly collected along the Kenyan coast, (9 field trips). This has resulted in a large number of species in the study area: 14 (on a total of 15). The coasts of Zanzibar were sampled during 2 collecting periods and resulted in 8 species. This research results in a preliminary list of Zonariae for Kenya and Zanzibar (Tanzania). This checklist is undoubtedly incomplete because of the reduced number of collecting sites, the restriction to a single season and the patchiness of algal distribution. Moreover, the subtidal zone, on the seaward side of the fringing reef, has almost never been visited because of the strong surf and the lack or sporadic availability of diving facilities. |
