Abstract |
The suitability and nutritional value of the euryhaline rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, fed on baker's yeast, for the larval stage of a small European cyprinid, the gudgeon Gobio gobio L., were investigated. Several parameters such as level and frequency of feeding, maximal food intake and feed conversion rate (FCR) were determined during the first month of larval rearing. The survival rate of the larvae was very high, generally more than 90%. The best growth was attained with the highest daily ration (from 2500 rotifers per larva during the first week of rearing to 5500 rotifers per larva during the fourth) and a 4 times-a-day feeding frequency, with a FCR of 0.86. From a mean initial body weight of 0.5 mg at hatching, the larvae reached 17.5 mg in 3 weeks. However, a reduction in the growth rate was observed after the second week, indicating a nutritional deficiency of the yeast-fed rotifers or a too small size of this live food. When the fishes are larger than 10–12 mm (after about 10–15 days of feeding), they would probably grow better on a larger prey such as Artemia salina or on an appropriate dry food. |
