Abstract |
This document reviews and compiles the scientific information on the main commercial species whose stocks are shared by the coastal countries of the Adriatic Sea: European hake (Merluccius merluccius), Red mullet (Mullus barbatus), breams (Pagellus spp.), Whiting Merlangius merlangu), anglerfish (Lophius budegassa and Lophius piscatorius), Commons sole (Solea vulgaris), Horned octopus (Eledone cirrhos) and Musky octopus (Eledone moschata), Common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), European squid (Loligo vulgaris), Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) and Deepwater rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris). Following an introductory section, giving a geographical and hydrographical description of the area this document reviews, in its first part, the research carried out over the years on demersal fishery resources in the Adriatic Sea. It starts from the first expedition "Challenger" in 1873 and includes the results achieved up to year 2000-01. The second part of the document provides a description of each target species including bio-ecology, lifehistory parameters, fishery exploitation and fishing gear selectivity information. This work is the result of international scientific cooperation among the fishery research institutions participating in the FAO-AdriaMed Project. |
