Abstract |
The aim of this research is to determine the seasonal and regional behavior of SPM concentration in the North Sea, based on a time span from May 2002 to June 2005. The research showed as expected a clear visible seasonal pattern for all hydrodynamic regions. Also expected was that regions with a strong stratification shows less annual SPM concentrations than regions with a well mixing during the years. The theory of BAEYE ET AL. (2011) could be extended for the entire North Sea that SW-winds have a negative correlation to SPM concentrations, while NE winds have a positive correlation on the SPM concentration for the entire North Sea.The research of SPM patterns in the North Sea is of significance to analyze ecological systems, in particularly the role of SPM for primary production and food chains. Also the SPM is related to the sediment transport in the North Sea and influences the occurrence of erosion and accumulation areas. The increasing degree of human activities in the North Sea during the last decades and presumably close future will cause at least to additional higher local SPM concentrations. Deepening of ports and building of offshore parks erode suspended matter from the sea floor, how much human activities influence the regional SPM concentration in the North Sea isn’t yet predictable and could be a scope of further research. |
