Abstract |
Finding markers directly correlating effects of estrogenic chemicals with the reproductive system of male fish is of great importance. In fish, gamma -glutamyl transpeptidase ( gamma -GTP) has been localised in various tissues, but not in testes. However, in testes of mammals gamma -GTP has been localised to Sertoli cells and used as a Sertoli cell marker. If this also applies to fish, gamma -GTP could be used as a marker of effects on Sertoli cells for studies of estrogenic chemicals. In our earlier studies nonylphenol treatment of eelpout resulted in a marked reduction in testicular gamma -GTP activity concomitant with a reduction in Sertoli cell size. In contrast, treatment of platyfish resulted in a tendency of increased gamma -GTP activity concomitant with a hypertrophy of Sertoli cells. To study our hypothesis of testicular gamma -GTP being a Sertoli cell marker we have examined the relationship between the histological structure of Sertoli cells and gamma -GTP activity in 6 fish species. |
