Abstract |
The study of the community structure of coral reefs was conducted in two locations in Indonesia. The first location was in the northern part of Kepulauan Seribu, which has high land-based pollution and is also influenced by human activities. However, the coral reef ecosystem is in better condition than the southern part of Kepulauan Seribu, which is closer to the mainland. The second location was in Teluk Cenderawasih, where the coral reef ecosystem is still considered as a pristine area. Four stations were selected for each location. Line intercept transect along 10 m length with 10 replicates were clone in three depth zones at each station and each location. The result indicates that the number of hard coral genera, the cover of Acropora, non-Acropora and hard corals in the northern part of Kepulauan Seribu were lower than in Teluk Cendrawasih. The contrary result was found for algae, where the algae cover in the northern part of Kepulauan Seribu was higher than in Teluk Cendrawasih. According to those results, the condition of the coral reef in Teluk Cendrawasih was better than the condition of the coral reef in the northern part of Kepulauan Seribu. The land-based pollution from the mainland (especially from Jakarta), destructive fishing practices and the other detrimental effects of human activities (direct or indirect) might support the reasons why the coral reef condition in the northern part of Kepulauan Seribu was in poor condition. |
