Abstract |
Simon Stevin (°1548, Brugge – †1620, Den Haag) was een Vlaamse intellectuele duizendpoot die in de 16e en 17e eeuw als wiskundige, natuurkundige, ingenieur en uitvinder werkzaam was in de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Eén van zijn bekendste realisaties betrof de invoering van de tiendelige breuken, waarmee hij aan de basis ligt van ons decimaal stelsel. Stevin droeg bovendien in belangrijke mate bij tot de verrijking van de Nederlandse taal, door ervoor te kiezen om zijn werken niet in het gebruikelijke Latijn, maar wel in de volkstaal te publiceren. De maritieme en waterbouwkundige erfenis van Stevin omvat een breed gamma aan verwezenlijkingen. Hij ontwierp nieuwe pomp- en drainagesystemen, leverde bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van baggertechnieken in havengebieden en was verantwoordelijk voor de bouw van de eerste zeilwagen in onze streken. Voor de maritieme wereld is vooral ‘De Havenvinding’ (1599), zijn werk over plaatsbepaling op zee, van uitzonderlijk belang. |
