Abstract |
In this study research is performed on an innovative technique for measuring bed load transport using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The technique resolves around using the bottom bias inherent to the bottom tracking feature of ADCPs as a parameter for the velocity of the bed load (vbed load). Tests were performed in a flume with two different ADCP devices, which are the StreamPro 2000 kHz (SP2000) and the Workhorse 1200 kHz (WH1200), to determine the validity of the measured velocity. This was achieved by comparing the bed load transport rate computed with the velocity of the bed load and the bed load transport rate computed with the data from a conventional sampler (load cell with pit sampler). A promising linear relation (R² = 0,972) was found between the bed load velocity measured with the SP2000 and the bed load transport rate computed with data from the conventional sampler. However, the bed load transport rates computed with the bed load velocity exceed those from the conventional sampler by up to a hundred times depending on the flow rate. Further studies on the computation of the bed load transport rate using the bed load velocity and measurements using different type of sediment are needed in order to make definite conclusions. |
