Abstract |
To provide a safe locking process the forces acting on ships during levelling must be kept below certain threshold values. Due to the limitations of the present measurement techniques Flanders Hydraulics identified the need of a new technique to validate a lock levelling accurately, safely and efficiently. This paper describes the pathway of the development of a new innovative measurement technique, supported by the Programme for Innovation Procurement of the Government of Flanders. A preliminary study concluded the absence of an off-the-shelf solution but pointed out some possibilities for new developments. Within the project two different possible techniques have been explored. The objective of this project is to identify the suitability of these techniques by means of Proof of concepts. Apixa explored a technique based on stereovision, Iv-Infra explored a technique based on tachymeters tracking prisms positioned by drones. The real Proof of Concept of both techniques was executed in October and November 2023 in an ECMT class IV lock. During both Proof of Concepts reference measurements were carried out by Flanders hydraulics and The General Technical Support Division. By the time of writing of this paper the measurements of the Proof of Concepts are being processed. The preliminary results look promising but further processing and analysis is needed. |
