Abstract |
This ecologic atlas concerns birds that look for food on the bottom of the sea, without having to swim or dive. Some could, but they don’t do it because they would rather look for their food on their feet, when the sea is temporarily withdrawn. Wad birds are the name under which this big group of stilt birds, seagulls, herons, ducks and geese are collected, being dependent on the tidal zone for their food supplies. While composing this book we gave ourselves two limitations. We will mainly focus on the stilt birds, and less on the other species. Additionally we chose the Wad area of North West Europe as main focus area, and we only pay a limited amount of attention to the wad areas elsewhere in the world. The best known Wad area in the Netherlands is the Wadden Sea, a part of the international Wadden Sea, that extends from Germany to Denmark. But the Wad birds are just as numerous in the Delta area, where the wads are indicated as mud-flats, and marshes as saltings. The yearly cycle of these ‘Dutch’ Wad birds is being described. This is why this book is also about the Tundra and tropical wad areas, because most of the wad birds that can be seen in our regions, breed during summer in the high North and spend wintertime in the tropical sun. |
