Abstract |
Model experiments are normally performed in calm water to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients. With these coefficients simulations are conducted to predict the manoeuvrability of the vessel. These simulations are only valid in the tested calm deep water conditions but to reach river mouths or ports at the coast a vessel needs to pass through access channels. In these channels shallow water with waves is present. The manoeuvring performance in waves may be significantly different from the performance in calm water conditions. This thesis considers the impact of different wave climates on the manoeuvring of vessels in shallow water. Model tests with a large container carrier are executed in different wave climates. The forces and moments are measured at various wavelengths in head and stern waves. The tests are also executed at two different water depths. The measured forces and moments are used to look at the different influence that the wave climates have on the manoeuvring characteristics. The added ship resistance is investigated by comparing the results for the resistance in the wave climates with the calm water test results. Also the change of the hydrodynamic coefficients due to the waves is studied. Simulations with SEAWAY are executed and compared with the test results. |
